Glendale is a sprawling, freeway-accessible suburb that balances quiet residential areas with buzzing commercial zones. The Americana mall features high-end retailers, eateries and apartments ringed around a lawn and an animated fountain. Lancaster is a city located in South Central Pennsylvania which serves as the seat of Pennsylvania's Lancaster County and one of the oldest inland towns in the United States. Acton is a town and an unincorporated census-designated place in Los Angeles County, California, near the Antelope Valley. According to the 2010 census, Acton had a population of 7,596. Acton is a small residential community located in the Sierra Pelona Mountains. It is off the Antelope Valley Freeway (Highway 14) near Palmdale. Acton is roughly 20 miles (32 km) northeast of the San Fernando Valley and 47 miles (76 km) north of downtown Los Angeles. The town has a rural western theme which can be seen in its homes, commercial buildings, and historical buildings (some of which date back to the late 1800s). The homes in the mountains around Acton have views of the valley below. In the valley are ranch style homes, often with equestrian facilities. While Acton is not a part of the Antelope Valley, it is grouped together with the Valley in the General Plan. Acton has a Metrolink commuter rail station on its border with Palmdale that is themed in an "old western" style and has been seen in various movies and commercials.
Acton was founded in 1887 by gold miners who were working in the Red Rover Mine. It was named after&nbsp;Acton, Massachusetts&nbsp;by one of the miners. Two of the best-known gold mines located in Acton were the Red Rover mine and the Governor mine. Mining of&nbsp;gold,&nbsp;copper, and&nbsp;titanium&nbsp;ore continued into the early 1900s. The town originally had served as a railroad camp from 1873 to 1876 when the Saugus-Mojave section of the Southern Pacific Railroad was under construction. Acton was once considered for the&nbsp;State capital&nbsp;of&nbsp;California. California Governor&nbsp;Henry T. Gage&nbsp;(1899&ndash;1903) owned the Governor Mine, hence the name, and sought to relocate the capital to Acton. This effort ultimately failed and the capital was not moved from&nbsp;Sacramento. In the late 1880s, Acton started to become more of a ranching and farming community. In 1889 Acton's first hotel and its first saloon, the "49er", was opened and is still in business today.

Arcadia&nbsp;is a city in&nbsp;Los Angeles County, California, United States, located about 13 miles (21&nbsp;km) northeast of downtown Los Angeles in the&nbsp;San Gabriel Valley&nbsp;and at the base of the&nbsp;San Gabriel Mountains. It is the site of the&nbsp;Santa Anita Park&nbsp;racetrack and home to the&nbsp;Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden. The city had a population of 56,364 at the 2010 census, up from 53,248 at the 2000 census. The city is named after&nbsp;Arcadia, Greece.
For primary and secondary education the city is served by the Arcadia Unified School District. Reading scores for the AUSD are 76.6% higher than the state average and math scores are 67.9% higher than the state average. It is estimated that 88% of Arcadia students are at public schools and 12% in private and/or parochial institutions.
Arcadia Unified School District has one highly ranked and prestigious high school, Arcadia High School. It is among the few public high schools in California to receive a distinguished GreatSchools Rating of 10 out of 10. There are three middle schools, and six elementary schools, two which are winners in the United States Department of Education's Blue Ribbon Schools program. Approximately five percent of California schools are awarded this honor each year following a rigorous selection process. Eligibility is based on federal and state criteria including the No Child Left Behind program, Academic Performance Index (API), and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). The requirements are many and strict, and are based on such areas as a strong curriculum, solid library media services, professional teachers, and counseling programs at all grade levels. In 2010, BusinessWeek ranked Arcadia as the best place to raise children in the state of California for the second year in a row, citing the city's excellent school system as one of the factors in addition to the low crime rate.

Monrovia is the fourth-oldest&nbsp;general-law city&nbsp;in Los Angeles County and the&nbsp;L.A. Basin&nbsp;(after Los Angeles,&nbsp;Santa Monica, and&nbsp;Pasadena, all now&nbsp;charter cities[6]). Incorporated in 1887, Monrovia has grown from a sparse community of orange ranches to a residential community of over 37,000.
Around 500 BC, a band of Shoshonean-speaking Indians named the&nbsp;Tongva&nbsp;established settlements in what is now the San Gabriel Valley. They were called the Gabrieli&ntilde;o Indians by early Spanish missionaries, a tribe of&nbsp;Mission Indians. The Tongva were not farmers; they gathered wild seeds, berries, and plants along rivers and in marshlands. Abundant oaks in the Valley, such as&nbsp;Coast Live Oak&nbsp;and&nbsp;Interior Live Oak&nbsp;provided a staple of the Tongva diet:&nbsp;acorn&nbsp;mush made of boiled acorn flour.
In 1769, the&nbsp;Portol&agrave; expedition&nbsp;was the first recorded Spanish (or any European) land entry and exploration of present-day California, then the Spanish colonial&nbsp;Las Californias Province&nbsp;of the&nbsp;Viceroyalty of New Spain&nbsp;(colonial M&eacute;xico). It had been claimed from sea by&nbsp;Juan Rodr&iacute;guez Cabrillo&nbsp;in 1542 for the&nbsp;King of Spain, Europeans first visited the San Gabriel Valley, including Monrovia. The expedition, led by&nbsp;Gaspar de Portol&agrave;, proceeded north from&nbsp;San Diego, passing through the area en route to&nbsp;Monterey Bay. Accompanying Portol&agrave; was&nbsp;Franciscan&nbsp;padre&nbsp;Juan Cresp&iacute;, famed diarist of the expedition. Much of what is known of early California is from Crespi's detailed descriptions.
In 1771, the Franciscans established the&nbsp;Mission San Gabriel Arcangel&nbsp;in the San Gabriel Valley. The mission continued after Mexican independence in 1822. In 1833, the Mexican Congress initiated&nbsp;secularization&nbsp;of the missions in&nbsp;Alta California, to begin seizure of mission properties for sale to private rancho grantees.
In 1841,&nbsp;Alta California&nbsp;Governor&nbsp;Juan Alvarado&nbsp;issued&nbsp;Mexican land grants&nbsp;for&nbsp;Rancho Azusa de Duarte&nbsp;to&nbsp;Andres Duarte, a Mexican soldier; and for&nbsp;Rancho Santa Anita&nbsp;to&nbsp;Hugo Reid, a naturalized Mexican citizen of Scottish birth. Monrovia is made of parts of these two&nbsp;ranchos.
In the mid-19th century, most of Rancho Azusa de Duarte was subdivided and sold by Duarte to settle his debts. Some of those parcels became part of the ranch of&nbsp;William N. Monroe, Monrovia's&nbsp;eponym.
Rancho Santa Anita changed hands several times before the multimillionaire, silver baron and rancher,&nbsp;E.J. "Lucky" Baldwin&nbsp;acquired it in 1875. That same year his Los Angeles Investment Company began subdividing and selling parcels from many of his ranchos. In 1883, 240 acres (970,000 m&sup2;) of Rancho Santa Anita were sold to Monroe for $30,000. Additional parcels of Rancho Santa Anita were sold to Edward F. Spence,&nbsp;John D. Bicknell,&nbsp;James F. Crank, and J.F. Falvey.
The completion of the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley Railroad in 1887, later sold to the Santa Fe, (which would run through Monrovia), and Southern Pacific railroads to Southern California would bring new people looking for homes and investment opportunities. With this in mind, Monroe, Spence, Bicknell, Crank, and Falvey combined their land under the business name of the Monrovia Land and Water Company in 1886, centered at Orange (now Colorado Boulevard) and Myrtle Avenues; the first tract extended from Magnolia Avenue on the west to Charlotte Avenue (Canyon Boulevard) on the east, a half block south of Walnut on the south and a half block north of Lime on the north. The subdivision was subdivided into 600 500-foot (150 m) by 160-foot (49 m) lots and sold.
The town was incorporated in 1887 under the leadership of prohibitionists who wished to control the arrival of an unwelcome saloon. The first order of business for the newly formed government was to pass a tippler's law, prohibiting the sale of alcohol.
In 1903, the&nbsp;Monrovia News&nbsp;was established. That same year, the&nbsp;Pacific Electric&nbsp;was opened, providing transportation to and from Los Angeles, making it possible for Monrovia homeowners to work in Los Angeles.
&nbsp; Monrovia, 1914 (Myrtle Avenue, looking north) In 1905, Carnegie funds became available and with the help of the Board of Trade (forerunner to the Chamber of Commerce), and the Monrovia Women's Club, a bond issue was passed to purchase the Granite Bank Building to be used as a City Hall, and to acquire property for a public park. The Granite Building serves as the city hall, fire and police department facilities in 1961 and the fire department in 1974. In 1956, the old Carnegie library building was torn down and a new library was constructed. In March 2007, a new library was voted on by the people of Monrovia. It won with 70% yes votes. The library now has 190,000 books, a heritage room for historical documents, and areas for children, teens, and adults.
A&nbsp;city council-manager&nbsp;type government was instituted in 1923.
In 1930, the Monrovia Airport, also known as the Foothill Flying Club, was commercially established. The small airstrip claimed to have had 12,000 paying customers use the airfield in 1932 and on the 19th of May, 1938, the first airmail flight took off from the Monrovia Airport. Ownership of the airport changed hands several times during the time it was in operation but was remembered by pilots to be "the friendliest little airport in the country." Apart from usage by Riley Brothers, TWA Captain and former airshow pilot Kalman Irwin, and, Pancho Barnes, the airfield is well known for its use as a movie-filming location. The first movie to be filmed at the Monrovia Airport was "The Fighting Pilot." Other films shot at the airfield included 20,000 Men a Year," "The Great Plane Robbery," and most notably, "The Big Noise," featuring Laurel and Hardy. The 35-acre airfield, used as a runway as well as an airplane repair and storage service, was eventually forced to close in 1953 after being sold to Consolidated Engineering Corporation for redevelopment as a result of increased land values.
Monrovia was the home to the precursor to&nbsp;McDonald's. In 1937, Patrick McDonald opened a food stand on Huntington Drive (Route 66) near the old Monrovia Airport called "The Airdrome" (hamburgers were ten cents, and all-you-can-drink orange juice was five cents); it remained there until 1940, when he and his two sons,&nbsp;Maurice and Richard, moved the building 40 miles (64&nbsp;km) east to&nbsp;San Bernardino&nbsp;to the corner of West 14th Street and 1398 North E Street, renaming it "McDonald's".
